Photographer Makes Creative Portraits from Fruits, Vegetables and Flowers

Klaus Enrique Gerdes, a New York City photographer, has created a series of original portraits made exclusively from vegetables, fruits and flowers.

Gerdes told the PDN Gallery that the idea for his organic portraits first came to him while working with leaves. ”While I was photographing a human eye that was peeking out amongst hundreds of leaves, it occurred to me that I could actually utilize leaves to construct portraits or masks.” It just evolved from there and he started using fruits, vegetables and flowers. A Touch of Nature

Decorative Mango Wood Accents, $36 for a set of three

Hand carved from mango wood, these decorative wood balls come as a set of three. The mango wood used is sustainable, and mango trees are initially grown for their fruit, but once the trees reach a certain size and age, they stop bearing fruit. It is then that the trees can be cut down and used to create wood products. The removal of the old trees makes space for farmers to plant new mango trees. Eden Home Organic says that this not only means that none of the wood is wasted but it offers a supplementary income to mango wood farmers. LINK

The Buddha's Hand

The Buddha’s Hand is an unusual fruit rarely found in American grocery stores, but common to parts of China and India. It’s so named because its fingers are said to represent the hands of the Buddha praying:

In China the fruit is often carried in the hand or simply placed on a table in the home to bring those who live their good luck, happiness and long life. Its Chinese name, fo-shou, means exactly that when it is written alongside other characters. As well as culinary and household use the fruit, before maturity, is often prescribed as a tonic.

Fruit Shoot: Amazing High Speed Photography

There is almost a quiet serenity about the final violent moment in the life of this grapefruit. However, as in all acts of violence caught on camera, the truth is not quite a spick and span as the image suggests. Such was the force of the bullet that the cloth was torn apart and the plywood it was resting on was broken – a 12 centimeter hole punched right through it. What this grapefruit did to deserve such an untimely end is up to guess work. True, grapefruits are a little bitter, but to end like this?! LINK

Lemur’s Eyes Vs. Tasty Fruit

“With striking green eyes and a fluffy red and black coat, it’s easy to see why this cute little lemur is causing a stir. But at two weeks old, staff at the Scottish safari park where Ruffles resides are still unsure whether the animal is a boy or a girl. The red-ruffed lemur was pictured today getting to grips with its new surroundings… ‘They are endangered in the wild and we are pleased to have a new arrival here.’ Although for now it mostly stays beside its mother, curiosity got the better of it when it was presented with a pear. Ms Morrison added: ‘It was very taken with it and started licking it. But it’s being fed by mum for now.” LINK

Lemon Tree in Japan Bears Eleven Kinds of Fruit!

A 71-year-old farmer has found a unique solution to Japan's chronic shortage of space: grow 11 different kinds of fruit on a single tree! Manabu Fukushima of Onga, Fukuoka prefecture, combines natural horticultural skill, a lot of time and the kindness of neighbors to create one of the oddest trees you'll ever see: a very confused Lemon tree that bears ten other citrus fruits - and Fukushima isn't done yet!
At present, Fukushima's 30-year-old Lemon tree also bears distinctive Japanese citrus fruits like Dekopon, Hassaku Orange, Iyoyan, Amanatsu and Banpeiyu (a variety of Pummelo). LINK
