Millennium Falcon Guitar

What kind of guitar would Han Solo play a solo with? This Millennium Falcon Guitar, of course! Its maker, Travis S., told our pal Urlesque blog:

Tell us about the guitar’s construction.

I used a vintage Millennium Falcon toy / playset for the body. As it’s an electric guitar, the body material is relatively unimportant (in comparison to acoustic instruments) so i just had to concern myself with building the necessary structural elements of the instrument into the toy.

Since the aging plastic wouldn’t be able to withstand the tension of the strings, I pieced together a maple block running from end to end inside the ship. The bridge, neck, and strap pins connect to this piece; while attached firmly with some powerful glues the toy itself is almost entirely cosmetic.

The top of the toy has been routed out for the electronics, including some switch activated LEDs. Those required separate battery packs, which I made accessible using the structure of the toy; one pack is hidden in the original battery compartment while the other is attached to the ramp door that was designed to open.

Vintage national park posters

National Geographic has a gallery of vintage national park posters from the 1930s.

Created in the mid-1930s in response to the Great Depression, the Works Progress Administration and its Federal Arts Project were focused in part on providing artwork for public buildings while assisting struggling artists. Artists were tasked with creating posters that promoted the landscapes and wildlife of America's parks. The program ended in 1943, and the largest collection of WPA-era prints--including the selection in this gallery--is now in the Library of Congress.

Antique Phonographs

Before the MP3, before the CD, before the cassette tape and before the 8-track, there was the almighty vinyl record. Thomas Edison essentially invented the phonograph, paving the way for music to be heard by Americans and people worldwide. Vinyl still stands as the most durable way to keep music around. While some of the phonographs and gramophones would eventually burn out trying to play a massive record collection, the vintage sound they give off brings back memories of times that were simple and fun. Sinatra's First Vintage: 'Come Fly With Me' is a Cabernet Sauvignon...

Sinatra Family Estates:

Sinatra Family Estates is proud to announce the release of its first vintage, “Come Fly With Me,” a limited-production 2007 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (500 cases). The wine is being produced from a 5-acre vineyard site in Napa Valley. “We spent several years seeking out the right vineyard land for this project and are delighted with the quality of fruit it is producing,” said Sinatra Family Estates managing partner John Schwartz. The wine exhibits a deep ruby color with flavors of cedar, tobacco leaf, blueberry, and black currant, with beautiful tannins and a nice fleshy finish.

Each vintage of the Cabernet Sauvignon will pay tribute to the music and artistry of Frank Sinatra. The initial vintage celebrates the classic “Come Fly With Me,” recorded by Sinatra in 1957. The album of the same name became Sinatra’s first-ever #1 on the Billboard charts and was nominated in 1959 for an Album of the Year Grammy. The wine label is highlighted with a classic 45 rpm, embossed with the logo of Reprise Records, Frank Sinatra’s own record company founded in 1960. The fedora is in orange, Frank’s favorite color. Vintage Japanese robot gallery

Wired's posted a photo gallery from the new show of vintage Japanese robots opening at the Sci Fi Museum in Seattle.

Iconic graphic designer Tom Geismar, whose firm Chermayeff & Geismar has created memorable logos for Mobil, PBS and other U.S. institutions, has been collecting the shiny bots for decades.

The Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame in Seattle will exhibit toys from Geismar's collection in Robots: A Designer's Collection of Miniature Mechanical Marvels through Oct. 26. The vintage robots on display reflect Geismar's trained eye. "I've really restricted myself to ones that appealed to me as interesting, imaginative designs," he says.
