Rolling Shutter Effect
(YouTube link)
Have you ever seen an airplane propeller that looked like this? It’s called the rolling shutter effect {wiki}. A cell phone camera records what it sees by scanning from one side of the frame to the other (or top to bottom), and strange things happen when the scene you are shooting moves faster than the image scanner. Another video illustrates how the slow scanning process of a cell phone camera creates this effect. -Via: reddit, Via: Neatorama
THE CROUCHING SCULPTURE
“Anthony Gormley’s latest mammoth sculpture, Exposure which is to be unveiled formally in September, has opinion divided. Nothing particularly new there, you might say. Yet Exposure, weighing in at 60 tons, 85 feet in height and poised rather delicately in a crouching position is causing something of a ruckus in the Netherlands, where it has been assembled.” w/ photos. FOUR-LEGGED FISH
“Perhaps he had just got tired of swimming. For this odd-looking fish looks like he’s just decided to head out for an evening stroll along the ocean floor. But while it looks like he has sprouted legs, this angler fish’s limbs are just the fins he uses to balance himself on the sea bed. The fish rests on the ocean floor as he prepares to make a dart for any passing prey he has lured towards him using the protrusion above his mouth.” w/ photos. LINK

WORLD’S SMALLEST CAMPER
“Bufalino by german industrial designer, Cornelius Comanns, is a small camper which is equipped to meet the basic needs of one person. The concept behind the project is to offer absolute flexibility during periods of travel. The minimalist construction is based on the existing piaggio APE 50 three wheeled light transport vehicle; a model chosen for its economic and fuel efficient benefits. However, the more complex structural components such as the frame, the chassis, and engine are derived from the original piaggio model.” w/ photos. LINK

THE BOAT SHAPED LIKE A GIANT ZIP
“When Moses thought of parting the sea you can bet he never thought of using a zip. Japanese artist Yasuhiro Suzuki though has created a motorboat designed to look like a giant version of the fastening, with the wake it leaves behind in the water meant to represent its teeth. Suzuki made a scale model of his design back in 2004 but has only now unveiled the full-sized vessel. Describing his creation, the artist said: ‘This work is a boat modeled after a zipper tab. ‘As the vessel glides through the water, the wake looks like a zipper coming undone, suggesting the image of the sea opening up. ‘The Zipper Ship will travel to and fro between Takamatsu and Megijima [in Japan] and will also carry passengers.” w/ photos. Time-Lapse Video of Asteroid Discoveries for the Past 30 Years
(Video Link)
This time-lapse video by YouTube user szyzyg shows asteroids in our solar system as they have been discovered since 1980:
Notice now the pattern of discovery follows the Earth around its orbit, most discoveries are made in the region directly opposite the Sun. You’ll also notice some clusters of discoveries on the line between Earth and Jupiter, these are the result of surveys looking for Jovian moons. Similar clusters of discoveries can be tied to the other outer planets, but those are not visible in this video.
As the video moves into the mid 1990’s we see much higher discovery rates as automated sky scanning systems come online. Most of the surveys are imaging the sky directly opposite the sun and you’ll see a region of high discovery rates aligned in this manner.
At the beginning of 2010 a new discovery pattern becomes evident, with discovery zones in a line perpendicular to the Sun-Earth vector. These new observations are the result of the WISE (Widefield Infrared Survey Explorer) which is a space mission that’s tasked with imaging the entire sky in infrared wavelengths.
Astronomers have so far found about half a million minor planets in our solar system.

Press Your Ashes Into Your Favourite Vinyl Record
British Company, And Vinyly, will press your charred remains into your very own hyper-personalized spinning analog musical platter. The starter kit comes with your own generic gravestone-style cover art, 24 minutes of audio of your choosing, and 30 copies of your final release.
The company was founded by Jason Leach, who co-founded the techno group and record label Subhead in the 1990s. I’d like to have my ashes pressed into Psycho Killer. I can just picture the mourners at my funeral getting their groove on to the beat of The Talking Heads.

Rare ‘fire tornado’ filmed in Brazil
A fire tornado caused by brush fires and strong winds has stopped motorway traffic as drivers in Brazil gawped at the rare phenomenon.
The whirlwind of flames burned through fields beside the road in the northwest city of Aracatuba in Sao Paulo state. But, as quickly as it appeared, the roaring twister fizzled down and just a smouldering line in the land remained.
The firestorm followed a drought which has led to brush fires across Brazil. Fire tornados, also known as fire whirls or fire devils, are rare and depend on certain air temperatures and currents to create a vertical, rotating column of air.
In 1923, a fire tornado ignited by the Great Kanto earthquake in Tokyo grew to the size of a large city and killed 38,000 people in 15 minutes. At the time most of the buildings in Japan were made from wood and fire spread from house to house, destroying the city. LINK, Via: Youtube

SWIMMING IN BERNE’S FAST-FLOWING CITY RIVER
“Much of Europe has experienced sweltering summer weather over recent weeks. So it’s not surprising when people look for a cool and shady spot, and maybe even a refreshing dip. But how easy is that in a busy city in a land-locked country? In the Swiss capital Berne, people have a spectacular solution to the problem, using the fast-flowing river Aare.” w/ video. LINK

Stages of a Multi-Dimensional Woodcarving, by Scott McNeill
"QUOTE" This sculpture started as the question, "Would it be possible to express a perspective that could see everything, everywhere at the same time?"
First, I would need to carve an ordinary environment of distinct linear perceptions. I.E.-'this is what he sees, that is what she sees, etc.' In this sculpture, each carved section represents what one of the characters from another section sees (example: the rhino, a guy viewing artwork and the corner of a woman's face is what the man, in the upper left section sees; the rhinoceros sticking his head through the window (lower right) sees the lion and the same guy viewing artwork but from a different angle , and so on).
