Dubstep Dispute

Dubstep Dispute from Fluxel Media on Vimeo.

(vimeo link) Dubstep robots have a disagreement and express it in their own way. This is probably the most appropriate use of dubstep music. For laughs, it ranks up there with the turkeys! This short film is by Fluxel Media with music by Nostalgia. Link -Via: Metafilter, Via: Neatorama

Chrome-plated Universe

Recently astronomers used the Suzaku orbiting X-ray observatory, operated jointly by NASA and the Japanese space agency, to discover the largest known reservoir of rare metals in the universe. Suzaku detected the elements chromium and manganese while observing the central region of the Perseus galaxy cluster. The metallic atoms are part of the hot gas, or "intergalactic medium," that lies between galaxies.

Exploding stars, or supernovas, forge the heavy elements. The supernovas also create vast outflows, called superwinds. These galactic gusts transport heavy elements into the intergalactic void.

TOP 10 SCULPTURES MADE FROM HUBCAPS

“Hubcaps as art is not a brand new concept. But these hubcap sculptures by Ptolemy Elrington are definitely something different. These bad ass metal sculptures look like deadly robots built by other robots to create a giant robot army meant to destroy the human race. Ptolemy gets hubcaps from the side of the road, friends and family and even strangers.” w/ photos. LINK

ABB FlexPicker Robots

LINK: Youtube

The FlexPicker is already infiltrating our manufacturing lines, picking and flexing its way to faster production methods and more efficient packaging efforts. And the writing has been on the wall for quite a while: the robot is replacing human hands on the factory floor. It’s a sad thought, especially in this economy, that people would be forced out of jobs to make way for a robot that doesn’t necessarily have to put food on the table for its family. That twinge of sympathy for the man who spent a myriad of years on an assembly line, learning every nuance and quirk of the assembly process, makes the FlexPicker and its brethren a bittersweet testimonial to human engineering and shrewd capitalism.

But however the industrial robot is viewed, be it efficient and cost effective or a mechanical embodiment of corporate greed, it is a triumph of accomplishment and a technological marvel. Robots like the FlexPicker have come and they are here to stay. And if that stunning realization doesn’t cheer you up, perhaps this video would. Aren’t those little pancakes just adorable? LINK

Yoichiro Kawaguchi's fanciful squids

These 3-D models of professor/computer graphic artist Yoichiro Kawaguchi's computer graphics are Woodring-esque mind blowers. According to Pink Tentacle, Kawaguchi and his team of researchers are "developing robots designed to imitate primitive life forms. Mockups have been put on display at a Shinto shrine in Tokyo, and working versions of the robots are scheduled for completion in two years." LINK
