How To Make Alcohol From Table Sugar

“It is very easy and inexpensive to make alcohol from sucrose. Such alcohol is made by fermenting granulated sugar with a certain kind of yeast, and up to 20 percent (40 proof) alcohol can be produced. Follow these steps to make a base alcohol that can be used to make a variety of alcoholic beverages, such as fancy liqueurs or cordials and jungle juice (hard liquor mixed with fruit juice).”

Lyrics.
I can almost see it
That dream I'm dreaming but
There's a voice inside my head sayin,
You'll never reach it,
Every step I'm taking,
Every move I make feels
Lost with no direction
My faith is shaking but I
Got to keep trying
Got to keep my head held high
There's always going to be another mountain
I'm always going to want to make it move
Always going to be an uphill battle,
Sometimes you going to have to lose,
Ain't about how fast I get there,
Ain't about what?s waiting on the other side
It's the climb
The struggles I'm facing,
The chances I'm taking
Sometimes they knock me down but
No I'm not breaking
I may not know it
But these are the moments that
I'm going to remember most yeah
Just got to keep going
And I,
I got to be strong
Just keep pushing on, cause
There's always going to be another mountain
I'm always going to want to make it move
Always going to be an uphill battle,
Sometimes I'm going to have to lose,
Ain't about how fast I get there,
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb
There's always going to be another mountain
I'm always going to want to make it move
Always going to be an uphill battle,
Sometimes you going to have to lose,
Ain't about how fast I get there,
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb
Keep on moving
Keep climbing
Keep the faith baby
It's all about
It's all about
The climb
Keep the faith
Keep your faith

Far-Out Photo: Sunrise in Space

This sunrise was photographed with a handheld camera by astronauts during space shuttle mission STS-127 on July 17, 2009. Credit: NASA.
Astronauts orbiting Earth see a lot more sunrises and sunsets that those of us stranded on the surface. They circle the planet every 90 minutes, and the sun just keeps coming.
A new picture of a sunrise from space was taken with a handheld camera by astronauts Friday on the day the Space Shuttle Endeavour docked with the International Space Station during shuttle mission STS-127.
Earth's atmosphere appears as a thin crescent shape ranging from white to blue to purple, while the planet in the foreground is a black as the void beyond.
From the surface of Earth, the sun rises because of Earths endless, 24-hour rotation. From here, sunrises and sunsets are often orange or red because the light has more atmosphere to pass through to get to your eye when the sun is near the horizon, and only the red light, with a longer wavelength then blue light, can make it.
The astronauts see little of that from their perch more than 200 miles up, but the effect is still beautiful. LINK

Taco Bell Chihuahua Dies

Best known for her gender bending role as a suave male chihuahua in the Taco Bell ad campaign, Gidget passed away Tuesday night at the age of 15.
"She made so many people happy," Gidget's trainer, Sue Chipperton told People.com. "Gidget always knew where the camera was."
Taco Bell's dog-centric commercials first aired in 1997 debuting the catchphrase "¡Yo quiero Taco Bell!" Further slogans "Drop the chalupa!" and "Viva Gorditas!" soon followed. Gidget shared the spotlight for some time with another chihuahua, Dinky, who played her female love interest, but as with most Hollywood stories, Gidget snatched the spotlight for herself.
After Taco Bell retired the commercials in 2000, Gidget went on to play Bruiser's mom in "Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde" (check her out at 9:05 in this clip) along with a cameo in a Geico commercial. LINK

Breathtaking panoramic shot of world's highest peaks

This awe-inspiring photograph captures the majesty of Mount Everest as you've never seen it before - from more than a mile above.
The spectacular panorama shows the breathtaking landscape of the Himalayas from six miles above sea level.
It was shot by an intrepid British photographer wearing breathing apparatus in -56C temperatures 36,000 feet up.
The summit of Everest, the world's highest peak at 29,035ft, takes centre stage above the 11,000ft vertical drop of the Kangshung Face, on the eastern side of the mountain.
British filmmaker and adventure cameraman Leo Dickinson took the photo from the stratosphere during his record-breaking balloon flight over Everest.
It is believed to be the highest panoramic picture taken by hand from a balloon, and has been described by the great mountaineer Reinhold Messner as the 'best snap on earth'.
With Nepal on the left of the frame, and Tibet on the right, the stunning skyline westward shows nine of the planet's highest summits.
These include Lhotse (27,940ft), Cho Oyu (26,906ft), Gyachung Kang (26,089 feet), Nuptse (25,850ft), Peak 38 (24, 904ft), Changtse (24,770ft), Shartse (24,471ft) and Ama Dablam (22,349ft). LINK

What lies behind our nose?'
This is the winning image of the 2007 International Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge.
The original CT scan was taken from a 33-year-old Chinese woman who came in to have her thyroid examined.
The 3D image is digitally reconstructed from many millimetre-thick 2D X-ray "slices" taken in the CT scanner. 182 slices are stacked together here, allowing us to look upward at her nasal passages from beneath her head.
The bones, soft tissue and fat have been removed from the image, leaving just the cast of the sinuses. When you go to the link there is a slide show. LINK

The search for Adji entering a new venue -- the Internet
Submitted by Ellen on 20 July, 2009 - 21:56.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office has taken a new approach in the search for Adji Desir, the missing Immokalee 6-year-old, possibly initiating a new trend other area law enforcement agencies will pursue in the future.
On July 10, the six-month anniversary of Adji’s disappearance, Sheriff’s Office officials posted a video about the case to the agency’s many Internet presences and asked members of the public to share it on the Web, including their profiles on the social networking sites Facebook and MySpace.
Two missing child experts said this is the first time they have heard of law enforcement taking such actions.
“This is not standard for law enforcement to reach out to the community like this,” said Dave Thelen, who has been helping parents find missing children worldwide for 20 years. “It is a good thing, because overall they are doing something that I have rarely heard of law enforcement doing, which is thinking outside the box.” LINK

SICK*****! Child Porn Found On Computer Taken In For Repairs

An East Chicago man who took his computer in for repairs has been charged with possession of child pornography.
Bryan S. Johnson, 47, of the 4000 block of Butternut Street, had about 1,000 photos of children having sex and engaging in sexual activity with adults, records state.
Johnson dropped off his computer May 1 at Computer Bay Store in Schererville, Ind. A technician working on the computer discovered a folder called "had sex with a 12-year-old."
Nothing that appeared to be child pornography was inside the folder, but police then confiscated the hard drive as evidence, obtained a search warrant and discovered the questionable files.
The charge is punishable by a maximum three-year sentence. LINK

What's a Takin?

A first for the L.A. Zoo is the birth of a female Sichuan takin, born on July 3, 2009!
Though takin may look like a combination of various animals: the snout of a moose, horns of a cow, tail of a bear, body of a buffalo and a mountain goat’s feet and agility, takins actually belong to a group of animals called goat-antelope. This group also includes domestic sheep and goats.
In China takin share a mountain habitat with the giant panda, which has proven beneficial for the takin’s preservation. Pandas are an “umbrella species,” which means that protecting panda habitats also safeguards the other animals that share their habitats. Like the panda, the takin is considered a treasure in its native land and is protected by the Chinese government. The newest addition to the Zoo’s takin herd is wandering the exhibit with its parents! LINK

Art Forms of Nature: The Ernst Haeckel Collection

Haeckel produced illustrations that people could take in and understand, images that glowed with color and brought the exotic and remote in to the libraries of the world. Really, there had not been anything like these extraordinary prints before. They were the culmination of decades of works for Haeckel, a contemporary of Darwin and he did much to popularize the work of the English naturalist although their ideas did diverge at several important points, as we shall later discover. The above is the 89th plate from Art Forms of Nature and shows a variety of turtle species. From the Leatherback at the top left to the Common Snapping Turtle (bottom right), Haeckel captures them marvelously. This was no attempt at photorealism, however. Note how sea and land (seamlessly) merge in the picture. His images, did, however, encapsulate his sense of order. LINK

He was a subject of the Austrian Empire by birth and later became an American citizen. Tesla is often described as an important scientist and inventor of the modern age, a man who 'shed light over the face of Earth.'
Nikola Tesla is best known for many revolutionary contributions in the field of electricity and magnetism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. LINK

Kentucky's Mystery Castle

There is a castle located in Kentucky. It is on Versailles Road between Lexington and Frankfort. It's a castle built on love. Rex Martin, a wealthy developer, build it for his wife, Caroline. They were in Europe and she saw some castles, and she was taken with them.
So in 1968, Martin broke ground along U.S. 60 in Woodford County. But by the mid-70s, the marriage was over. That's when construction of the 10,000 square foot home with seven bedrooms and baths, three dining rooms and a swimming pool stopped. And the rumors began. LINK

Atlas by Fernando Vicente

In his art blog called Atlas, Spanish artist Fernando Vicente takes the distinct forms of landmasses and convert them into fantastic images. I particularly like the map of Africa turned into a skull (with Europe being the exploding head - lots of political imagery there).
Check out the entire series here: Link | Fernando’s other work: AnatomÃas (and for those of you who like politics, check out his work for Diario El PaÃs). LINK

Slope Intercepts: The Rap
Lamar Queen is an 8th grade math teacher in Los Angeles, his methodology of teaching students includes writing and performing songs to reinforce lessons. When we discovered Lamar he already had a whole text book worth of songs and this video that he made with the help of teachers and students at his school. Although it is not polished, we believe in using art and music to teach children almost anything so we are happy to try and bring his mission of education through the arts to a wider audience. Jedi Drinking Song
This song performed by the Austin-based celtic band Brobdingnagian Bards describes the intoxicated adventures of Luke Skywalker. Here’s a sample of the lyrics:
A long time ago, in a pub far away,
I sat on a barstool, just drinking away,
I couldn’t hold it down, I guess I had too much
I felt a tremor in the force and then I lost my lunch
I woke up in a desert land, feeling hot and sick,
I saw a bearded man, he looked like some kind of hick,
He slowly waved his hand, and my pain was gone
He said let’s go see Yoda, and I’ll teach you this song.
So we got on a starship, and flew off into space
He said his name was Obi-Wan and there is no time to waste,
I have to get you trained before it is too late,
He said drink this bottle of whisky, and don’t give in to hate.
My training went on, and I’d drank most of the bar
We stopped for supplies on the nearest Death Star
I learned to control my fear, and hold my alcohol
Soon I was able to stand even when Obi-Wan would fall.

Vincent - Tim.Burton.Short.Animation.1982
If you ever had any doubt that Tim Burton wasn't a great storyteller, you haven't seen this older, short film called Vincent. With all that technology out there, a movie's story can often get lost, buried in special effects. It's nice to know that a sweet film like this exists, where a kid's imagination is explored and where, in the first few seconds, you can fall in love with a little boy named Vincent.
The film is a humorous look at a suburban boy named Vincent who reads Edgar Allen Poe and identifies with horror film star Vincent Price. The studio gave Burton the go ahead after Price read the story and agreed to do the voiceover.
Price said later that the film “was the most gratifying thing that ever happened. It was immortality–better than a star on Hollywood Boulevard” . LINK, Via: Youtube
