New Year’s Sparkling Wine Recommendations

I know next to nothing about champagne or sparkling wine, but I do know I’d like to have a bottle that costs more than $3.99 for my little gathering. But not much more than that. Luckily, Slashfood has my back. They have rated eight brands of bubbly of varying tastes and low price points, so if you are as clueless as I am, you should find this helpful. They even have a bottle of sparkling wine that tastes decent and costs, yes, $4. LINK

The Wolves
The Gray Wolf (Canis lupus; also spelled Grey Wolf, see spelling differences; also known as Timber Wolf or Wolf) is a mammal in the order Carnivora. The Gray Wolf shares a common ancestry with the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris), as evidenced by DNA sequencing and genetic drift studies. Gray wolves were once abundant and distributed over much of North America, Eurasia, and the Middle East. Today, for a variety of human-related reasons, including widespread habitat destruction and excessive hunting, wolves inhabit only a very limited portion of their former range. Though listed as a species of least concern for extinction worldwide, for some regions including the Continental United States, the species is listed as endangered or threatened. LINK: Youtube

The House That Nikolai Built

Dominating the skyline of Arkhangelsk, a city in Russia's far north-west, it is believed to be the world's tallest wooden house, soaring 13 floors to reach 144ft. The house that Nikolai Sutyagin built is also crumbling, incomplete and under threat of demolition from city authorities determined to end the former convict's (he spent 4 years in prison on racketeering charges) eccentric 15-year project.
Building began in 1992 and was two stories high, but he soon added three floors. He was not happy with the outcome and he added more floors and just kept goin.
Now penniless Nikolai Sutyagin lives in four poorly heated rooms at the bottom of his wooden log cabin with his wife and daughter. LINK

SAFE -T- BED

Somewhere between a sock and an actual bank lies the Executive Safe-T bed. Hollandia International's design incorporates a heavy-duty safe underneath the mattress and a cover in the head joint of the bed base.
The bed was originally developed for a wealthy international customer that wanted to keep a handgun close by at all times, but it is just as useful for keeping you valuables secure. The safe can be added to any Hollandia bed for around $400, but the beds themselves can run in excess of $20,000. LINK

Arcade Fire Videos

Both are music videos (Black Mirror and Neon Bible from their Neon Bible album), but are completely interactive. And pretty amazing.
For Black Mirror, you can turn on and off the various song tracks as the music is playing, so you can hear what the song sounds like with, say, just piano and vocals. I’ve seen stuff like this before, but the implementation is really good.
For Neon Bible, you get to control the lead singer’s various movements as he sings the song. Granted it’s a limited set of movements, but I played through it twice and found a completely different set of actions from one time to the next. So for those of us who really like easter eggs, this site can keep you entertained for a good amount of time.
What’s great about both is that they are on a timeline. You have certain windows of opportunity to do something, and once they pass you’ve missed them. So it becomes like a game (unlike most easter-eggy experiences, where the environment is static and you have all the time you want to click away). A really great idea.

Christian the Lion

Christian the lion - Full ending. LINK
I posted Christian the lion before but found both videos so thought I would do a repost. This is a very touching story and brought tears to my eyes. Not tears of sadness but tears of joy.
Christian left the Kora Reserve in 1973. He made his new territory along the Tana river, but when the Wakamba herdsmen kept bringing their livestock to his hunting ground, he moved on. George Adamson said in his autobiography, "I used to count the days on which we hadn't seen Christian, but when they reached 97, I gave up recording them in my diary." Because a lion can live from 12 to 15 years in the wild, Adamson believed that Christian ended his days in the Meru National Reserve only a few miles up river.
"Lion Man" Gareth Patterson, author, environmentalist, and the person who continued George Adamson's lion rehabilitation work, revisited Kora in 1998. This is what he found...

Zoo in Australia celebrates Christmas early
(NECN/ABC) - Christmas came early in the animal kingdom at Taronga Park zoo in Sydney, Australia, on Tuesday.
Some of the zoo's most famous residents awoke to some very merry treats.
The excitement was clearly too much for some, although zoo workers insist the lioness with her head in a paper bag was hungry or curious but not camera-shy.
For the meerkats it was a big event.
Even when one managed to get into a package but not out of it, until zoo staff went to help.
Mary the Gibbon, at 50 years old, had seen it all before and could barely be coaxed to ground-level for her Christmas goodies.
But she finally accepted her gifts and went back to the peace and quiet of her tree to enjoy the treats. LINK

Green Sahara Photos by Mike Hettwer

Photo: Mike Hettwer
Alan Taylor of the Big Picture Blog over at Boston Globe has a(nother) neat post - this time of fantastic photos of Mike Hettwer of a dinosaur fossil excavation in the Sahara Desert:
About 9,000 years ago, a very wet climate prevailed in parts of the Sahara Desert called the Neolithic Subpluvial period. Lasting several thousand years, this Green Sahara was home to many grassland and woodland animals as well as humans. While on an expedition for dinosaur fossils with paleontologist Paul Sereno in Niger in 2000, Hettwer discovered a burial area containing hundreds of skeletons from two distinct cultures, each thousands of years old - the Kiffian and Tenerian. Also found in the dry and desolate site were hunting tools, pottery, and bones of large land animals and fish.

John Henry Faulk’s Christmas Story

John Henry Faulk told this Christmas story on NPR in 1974. They published it on the web in 2005. It’s still a wonderful story.
The day after Christmas a number of years ago, I was driving down a country road in Texas. And it was a bitter cold, cold morning. And walking ahead of me on the gravel road was a little bare-footed boy with non-descript ragged overalls and a makeshift sleeved sweater tied around his little ears. I stopped and picked him up. Looked like he was about 12 years old and his little feet were blue with the cold. He was carrying an orange.

Doe saved from icy death
Smack dab in the middle of Lake Zumbro, a doe is trapped, not able to grip the slippery ice. With the wind-chill of 30 below zero, it could be a death sentence.
A sentence Steve Breland won't see carried out. "I'm going to try and put this rope around its neck without choking it," said Breland. Fear sets in for the helpless doe but Steve presses on.
Steve gives the doe a free toe. It's a full days workout for Steve and a lifetime of fright for the doe.
Every time Steve gets the doe off the ice, the deer goes right back on the ice again.
"There he goes back on the ice again," laughs Breland. But after a chuckle Steve was getting frustrated. "This is starting to tick me off," said Breland.
In the end, the deer makes it off the ice, takes a rest and says thanks Steve. LINK: Via: Liveleak
