Superb Computer-in-Piano Case Mod

Typically case mods come in the form of super-hero or gaming themes, but occasionally, we get these bizarre (yet awesome) types. For example, this all-wood classical piano which was converted into a multi-screen workstation.

The mod’s background story is pretty interesting in itself. The modder salvaged a termite-ridden, non-functional piano and refinished it into a PC case (the infested wood was removed and replaced). Flex ply was used for some parts and leatherette was used for touching up the upholstery. Custom mounts were put in for the displays (a 20-inch and two 24-inch monitors). LINK

Why We're Here: Twin Cities

With all the possibilities around the world, what is the “it” that keeps people here in the Twin Cities? We suspected the answer to the question "Why We're Here" was both simple and incredibly nuanced -- worthy of art. We took our camera to the streets of Minneapolis and St. Paul to find people willing to talk, unscripted, on film. The result is our collective love poem to the Twin Cities.

Why We're Here: Twin Cities is a six-minute film that explores what unites us, and unites us here, in the Twin Cities. Filmed on location the spring and summer of 2010 in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, the film features an original score by John Munson of the New Standards, the Twilight Hours, Semisonic and Trip Shakespeare, camerawork by Adam Olson and editing by Sam Heyn. JR Minkel, science writer, RIP

Rising-star science journalist JR Minkel, whose work we've linked to many times on Boing Boing, took his own life on Monday. Only 31 years-old, JR was a talented writer who covered space, physics, cosmology, and technology for Scientific American, where he was a staff writer, Popular Science, New Scientist, LiveScience, IEEE Spectrum, and many other publications. Author of the Instant Egghead Guide: The Universe, he also blogged at his own site, A Fistful of Science. JR had a knack for making complex science understandable by anyone, and his quest for knowledge, meaning, and humor shone through his writing. We send our deepest condolences to JR's family and friends. JR Minkel obituary (The Tennessean). LINK: Boing Boing

Celebrity Portraits Made from Their Own Trash

Through uncertain methods, San Francisco-based artist Jason Mecier convinces celebrities to donate personal trash to them. He turns the individual contributions into portraits of each celebrity:

He uses junk and discarded items donated by top stars, so yes…that Trojan condom box in the top left corner of Tina Fey‘s portrait actually came from Tina herself. Mecier has spent over 10 years creating outrageous portraits and is now so popular that stars contact him directly and pay $1,500 for a portrait, which he gladly makes from a bag of their junk that they provide.

Celebs who have asked for the portraits include Chris Rock, Pink, Tori Spelling, and Chelsea Handler, whose portrait includes empty vodka bottles, a Snuggie box, Martini glasses, bottle opener, buttons, batteries, chapstick, dice, pens, badges and movie tickets.

How to Blow and Pour Liquid Smoke

Smoking is bad for you! But let's be honest, smoke itself looks sorta cool. Here's a video of smoke looking like liquid, which makes it even cooler looking. You can even swirl the smoke around and pour it out like water.

To get that "liquid smoke" effect, the guy used an unfiltered cigarette (or joint for thicker smoke) and a cold glass. The key, he says, is to not breathe as you release the smoke into the cold glass or it'll throw things out of whack. The cold glass supposedly cools the smoke and makes it settle under the warm(er) air, which allows it to take on liquid-ish properties. Cool! Until someone gets cancer. "Magic Carp-pet" - Rug Design by CHC

The magical rug literally animates!!

When the rug is viewed through the specially designed glass coffee table, an animation of carp appears through a moire effect providing a surprise element of natural liveliness to the interior. The graphic apparition, replacing the traditional fish tank, is also a nod to the decreasing abundance of our most precious natural resource - water. Mythologically, the carp symbolises bravery and fortune. Linguistically, the "carp" becomes a humorous extraction of the "carpet" that reveals this intriguing little conversational piece on the floor. LINK: Youtube

Master Builder Makes Legos Bend To His Will In Ohio Stadium Replica

Opened in 1922 and currently able to handle more 100,000 fans, Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, is a sight to behold. It's almost as amazing as the Lego replica sitting in Paul Janssen's basement.

The 42-year-old Ohio State University professor tells NPR's Robert Siegel on All Things Considered what it was like to build the horseshoe-shaped stadium out of 1 million Lego pieces. Built at a scale of 1:120, it took years of planning, collecting pieces and building to complete the project.

The mini-stadium can seat only 6,000 Lego people — that's thanks to issues of scale, not Janssen's work.

You can see the results for yourself in the photos below, and in a full photo gallery over at The Columbus Dispatch.

RIP Mom "MISS YOU"

The years have gone by and many thoughts have gone through my mind. It is 1-2011 and it has been 11 years since my mom passed away. I got a phone call from my brother that he had found our Mom on her kitchen floor 1-18-2000(passed away).I fell against the wall and slowly went to the floor in disbelief. Still feels like yesterday.

My mom commented that she wanted to see in the millenium (2000) and she lived to see it.

I miss her so much, someone to talk to. That loving shoulder to cry on when you feel down. The motherly advice she was always so willing to give. For those of you with parents, spend as much time as possible with them. Some day they will be gone like both my parents and there is NO getting that time back.

There is other emotional things with name calling through my life that made me feel like I had failed in her eyes. I try hard and will continue to do so.

LOVE YOU MOM

Happy Feet LIVES!

Some kids just get a little over excited when the snow begins to fall. So it was with this little guy who - much to the bemusement of his penguin friends - just had to jump about and dance when the snow began to come down.

Ferrofluid following the magnetized conical screw of a meat grinder

Ferrofluid is attracted by magnetic flux. It flows with the gradient.
A track with continuously increasing flux density is formed by a conical screw.
Such a high pitch, conical steel-screw is difficult to make. It is much easier to just take it form discarded equipment, like in this case from a meatgrinder.
A meatgrinder core is tested in the field of an adjustable DC Magnet. The flux lines emerging from track at the ridge of the thread shall be of increasing density from bottom to top.

To visualise the flux density on the track, identical steel spheres are attached at high flux. With decreasing flux they will fall down when at their location the flux density falls under the critical value. With continuously decreasing flux they shall fall down in sequence from bottom to top.
The handmade screw shows a suitable increasing line with some distortions.

The final test shows that the meatgrinder screw is capable to levitate the ferrofluid on the track at the ridge of the thread from the basin to its top. LINK, Via: Youtube

The current United States flag was designed by a high school student

Robert Heft, born in Saginaw, Michigan, was the designer of the 50-star flag.
He designed the current U.S. flag in 1958 when he was 17 years-old for a class project. He unstitched the blue field from a family 48-star flag, sewed in a new field, and used iron-on white fabric to add 100 hand-cut stars, 50 on each side of the blue canton.

He originally received a B- for the project. After discussing the grade with his high school teacher, Stanley Pratt, it was agreed that if the flag was accepted by Congress, the grade would be reconsidered. Heft's flag design was chosen and adopted by presidential proclamation after Alaska and before Hawaii was admitted into the union in 1959. According to Heft, his teacher did keep to their agreement and changed his grade to an A for the project. Go to LINK to see the video.

Congress friends describe Giffords’ ‘miracle’ moment

Three Democratic colleagues were in the room Wednesday when Rep. Gabrielle Giffords opened her eyes for the first time on her own since being shot in the head at a political event Saturday.
The breakthrough -- publicly announced Wednesday night during President Obama's speech at a memorial service for the six people who died in Tucson, Ariz. -- came as New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz were sitting at Giffords' bedside. All three are close friends of the Arizona congresswoman.
The moment "felt like we were watching a miracle," Wasserman Schultz told reporters Wednesday night on their way back to Washington with Obama aboard Air Force One. "Other than the birth of my kids, this was the most incredible feeling to see ... one of your closest friends just struggle to come back to you."
Giffords has since begun yawning and spontaneously waking on her own, her attending physician Dr. Peter Rhee told reporters Thursday morning. She has begun physical therapy, with medical team members helping her to sit up and dangle her legs from the side of the bed. LINK

The interior was also restitched to include pink piping and stitching on black leather and suede seats with her initials "MCC" embroidered on the headrests. Fordson Snow Devil

(YouTube link)

This snow vehicle is an example of a screw-propelled vehicle.

In the 1920s the Armstead Snow Motor was developed. When this was used to convert a Fordson tractor into a screw-propelled vehicle with a single pair of cylinders, the combination became known as the Fordson Snow Devil. A film was made to show the capabilities of the vehicle as well as a Chevrolet car fitted with an Armstead Snow Motor.[6] The film clearly shows that the vehicle copes well in snow. Steering was effected by having each cylinder receive power from a separate clutch which, depending on the position of the steering gear, engages and disengages; this results in a vehicle that is relatively maneuverable. The promotional film shows the Armstead snow motor hauling 20 tons of logs.

Billionaire Builds $194k Playhouse For His Kids

A billionaire has treated his two children to the ultimate Christmas present – a $194,000 playhouse which costs as much as a three-bedroom home. The two-storey timber ‘home’ is a replica of the family’s chalet in the foothills of the Swiss Alps, having been built in Britain. It cost $194,000 and 2,000 man-hours to build, while a further $38,000 to $64,000 was spent on transport and installation – making it the world’s most expensive playhouse. The building – by Norfolk-based company Flights Of Fantasy – comes with double glazing, solid pine flooring and bespoke carved Swiss eaves, while lighting is provided by more than 400 decorative bulbs. The living room has a stone chimney, illuminated by led lights, and is packed with bespoke furniture and TV equipment.” w/ photos. LINK
